Luckily for our awesome friend, they find a new place where individuality is celebrated and celebrates with LOTS of colors. There has never been a bunny bird before so when one hatches and wants to play the bunnies and the birds both exclude the bunny-bird. Neither by Airlie Anderson is a sweet and super colorful book about exclusion and inclusion. Read through the reviews, I have read all these books, and choose a few to add to your classroom shelf! This list has 59 LGBTQ+ positive picture books for young children, and some will be age appropriate for your students ( we even have great ones for babies and toddlers) and some won’t. Two dad and two mom families are a fact, transgender children and adults are real, and all LGBTQ individuals and their families deserve to be represented, celebrated, and included in all parts of life, including all bookshelves. That teaches our children that these topics are shameful, that these books are taboo, and in turn that the families and people portrayed in them are.

We can not tell our children everyone is worth the same, everyone deserves respect, and then make these books “a sensitive subject” to be discussed (or not) at home because some think they are inappropriate for school. We can not do that without making our bookshelves inclusive too. Parents and teachers alike want to teach their children to be kind, inclusive, and compassionate. The world is a big place with all kinds of people. However, unlike my other book lists my LGBTQ+ book list for kids gets the most push back, because many people think that these books deal with “sensitive topics” and would be better handled at home.įist and foremost people existing, families loving each other, even the history of a rights movement are not sensitive topics they are simply people living, families loving each other and history. This makes me ecstatic, the first year I did the list in 2013, there were only 9 books on it. This is the 7th year I have shared an LGBTQ+ book list for kids filled with children’s books that celebrate Pride, and this year I am adding 15 new titles to the list.
